When You Hear From Me, It’s Me
The thing I dislike most about newsletters usually happens right after I subscribe.
I enter my email address, click the button, and discover that I’ve joined a sequence. A welcome message arrives. A few days later, another one follows. Then another. They may sound personal, but they were written months ago and scheduled to arrive whether the person who wrote them has anything new to say or not.
There’s nothing wrong with doing it that way. It just isn’t what I want to do.
How This Works
When you receive a newsletter from me, it’ll be because I sat down, wrote it, and clicked send. There won’t be a long welcome series waiting behind the signup form. I won’t email every Tuesday because somebody decided newsletters should arrive every Tuesday. Some months, you may not hear from me at all.
I’ll write when I have something worth telling you. That might mean a new story is coming out. One of my books goes on sale. I have some news about a story I’m working on. Occasionally, I may send a free short story just because I have one I’d like you to read.
That’s about it.
You Can Reply
When one of my newsletters arrives, you can hit reply the same way you would with any other email. Your message will come to me, and I’ll read it. You won’t be sending it into an unmonitored mailbox or receiving an automated response telling you that nobody checks the address.
I want the newsletter to feel less like joining a mailing system and more like getting an email from someone you know. I won’t pretend we’re old friends if we’ve never spoken, but the message itself will be mine. I wrote it because I had something to share with you, and you can answer if you have something to say back.
You may not hear from me often. But when you do, it’ll actually be me.
