Rodeo Clown

The Rodeo Clown Series — Book 1
A stoic ranch hand, a scarred bullfighter, and the sanctuary they built.

Scott Danner is working cleanup at a Wyoming rodeo when a bullfighter in full clown paint walks into the pens and starts flirting with him.

His name is Colt. He’s cocky, reckless, good enough in the arena to make fifteen hundred pounds of angry bull look almost manageable, and completely aware of the effect he has on Scott.

Colt is easy to watch. Understanding him takes longer. He can work a crowd and make confidence look effortless. Then the crowd disappears, the paint starts coming off, and Scott catches glimpses of a man who doesn’t seem nearly as sure of himself as he wants everyone to believe.

The closer Scott gets, the more he starts wondering how much of Colt is the man and how much is the performance. Colt isn’t making that question easy to answer.

There are rodeos, bulls, dusty back pens, late nights in a silver trailer, and a ranch hand who has spent years learning how to read people only to meet one man who keeps changing the rules.

Colt isn’t just hard to figure out. Every now and then, Scott gets the feeling Colt’s looking over his shoulder too. Whatever Colt left behind, it hasn’t quite left him. Scott wants to know what’s under the paint.

The trouble is, Colt has spent a long time making sure nobody gets close enough to find out.

Rodeo Clown is an M/M Western romance about two men who are very good at hiding different parts of themselves, and what happens when one of them finally lets the other get too close.

Start where it all began. The Confessions of a DL Cowboy prequel novellas follow Scott Danner’s younger years — the moments that shaped the man he becomes.

From the Novel

He reached the fence, hitched a boot onto the bottom rail as if he owned the place, and tipped his hat back. A smear of dirty blond hair showed, stuck to his forehead with sweat. And he looked at me. Straight at me. Just him and me, and the air getting thicker by the second.

“Haven’t seen you ’round here much.”

My grip tightened on the shovel handle. “Ain’t a rodeo hand,” I said, trying for casual, nodding toward the wheelbarrow. “Just clean up after ’em.” Did I sound breathless?

He studied me, one corner of that real mouth curving up. “Hell of a day for shovelin’ shit.”

“Pays the bills.”

He bit back a laugh, his eyes moving over me the way you’d look at a horse you were thinking about buying. “You always work this hard,” he asked, “or only when someone’s watchin’?”

The handle of the shovel was slick under my palms. It wasn’t the sun’s heat that was climbing up my neck. God, I really hoped he couldn’t see it.

He backed up another step, tugging that battered cowboy hat a little lower, shadowing his face again but not the smirk. “My trailer’s out back,” he said, voice low enough I had to lean in to hear it. “The silver one. Got a few beers in the cooler. You interested? Say… nineish?” Another pause. My skin prickled. “Boots optional.”

The shovel slipped from my fingers and landed with a soft thud I barely heard.

“Yeah,” I managed, voice hoarse. “Okay.”

He nodded, slow, like he’d known the answer all along. Turned. “Name’s Colt, by the way.”
